Extending the Lifespan of Your Bouquets

Fortunately, with a few simple tricks, you can prolong the lifespan of your bouquets and enjoy their splendor for days on end. In this blog post, we'll uncover six secrets for extending the longevity of your beloved bouquets, ensuring they stay fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.

1. Start with Fresh Flowers

The first secret to a long-lasting bouquet begins with selecting fresh flowers. When purchasing or picking flowers, choose blooms that are just beginning to open and show vibrant colors. Avoid flowers that are wilting or already past their prime, as they will have a shorter lifespan.

2. Trim the Stems

Before arranging your bouquet, trim the stems at a diagonal angle. This allows for better water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase, which can impede water uptake. Use sharp scissors or floral shears to make clean cuts, and remove any leaves that will be submerged in water to prevent bacterial growth.

3. Use Flower Food

Many floral arrangements come with packets of flower food, which contain nutrients and additives to prolong the life of the flowers. Dissolve the flower food in water according to the instructions on the packet, and change the water every few days to keep it fresh. If you don't have flower food, you can make your own by adding a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach to the water.

4. Keep Them Cool

To slow down the aging process of your flowers, place the bouquet in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heaters, or drafts. Heat can cause flowers to wilt more quickly, so keeping them in a cool environment will help them stay fresher for longer. You can also refrigerate certain flowers, like tulips or lilies, overnight to extend their lifespan.

5. Rehydrate Wilting Flowers

If you notice any flowers starting to wilt, there are ways to revive them and extend their lifespan. Remove the wilted blooms from the arrangement and recut the stems under water. Place the flowers in warm water for a few hours to rehydrate them before returning them to the bouquet.

6. Prune and Refresh

As your bouquet ages, remove any wilted or spent flowers to keep the remaining blooms looking their best. Recut the stems of the remaining flowers every few days to ensure they can continue to absorb water effectively. You can also rearrange the bouquet as needed to refresh the arrangement and give it a new lease on life.
